Mission of START is to develop a system of regional networks of collaborating scientists and institutions to conduct research on regional aspects of global change and to assess the causes and impacts of regional global change. START works towards providing relevant information to policy makers and governments. It aims to enhance scientific capacity in developing countries by strengthening and connecting existing institutions, by training global change scientists and by providing them with improved access to data, and research results.

Environment Congress for Asia and the Pacific is the congress, which consists of high-level government officials (including ministers), experts from international organizations and private organizations and environment researchers in the region, where they can freely exchange viewpoints in their personal capacities. The purpose of ECO ASIA is to promote long-term activities for environmental protection by governments and relevant organizations in Asia and the Pacific Region toward the realization of sustainable development of the Region.
International Human Dimensions Programme(IHDP) on global environment change is an international, interdisciplinary and non-governmental research programme, aiming at "the development and integration of research on the human dimensions of global environmental change".

Asia-Pacific Environmental Innovation Strategy Project (APEIS) was launched at the Environment Congress for Asia and the Pacific (ECO ASIA) 2001 held in Tokyo, Japan to further the outcomes of the ECO ASIA Long-Term Perspective Project (LTPP) for sustainable development in the Asia-Pacific region. The project aims to assist developing countries to enhance their capacity for environmental management and protection through development of scientific knowledge-based tools and innovative strategy options to promote informed decision-making for sustainable development for policy makers in the Asia-Pacific region.
